The Courtyard

The Courtyard brings dining, leisure and offices together around a shared outdoor square in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. The project occupies a 3,900 m² plot.

The brief

The programme combines international restaurants, including Maison Kayser, with a VIP lounge, a Sky Bar, children’s entertainment areas and offices. The design gives these different uses a common place to meet.

A shared centre

Walls and buildings enclose an inward-facing square, reached through three entrances. Each building looks onto this common exterior space, making the courtyard the organising element of the complex.

Designing with the sun

The position of the buildings responds to the sun’s path to create large shaded areas. Shade and enclosure shape the outdoor space as much as the individual buildings.
